B&R News: Big Data Report of Trade Cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative 2017 Released

Recently, the Big Data Report of Trade Cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative 2017 (“the Report”) was officially released in Dalian. This is the first annual report dedicated to trade and economic cooperation among the “the Belt and Road” countries based on Big Data.

 

The Report was compiled by Belt and Road Big Data Center of the State Information Center, Northeast Asia Big Date Center (Dalian), Belt and Road Big Data Technologies Ltd. and Dalian Infobank Co., Ltd. The Report focuses on the present status and forecast of the trade cooperation along the Belt and Road. The Report collects over 120 million pieces of data in more than 8,000 categories on import and export. The collected data then are analyzed and processed via data mining, cluster analysis and data visualization. The multi-dimensional analyses are conducted from the perspectives of bilateral trade volume, commodities, trading subject, trading mode and cooperative mode. Then, the Report draws a comprehensive and objective conclusion on the landscape of trade cooperation in 2016, and the status quo as well as the trend of trade cooperation both between China and 64 Silk Road countries, and between 31 Chinese provincial regions and Silk Road countries.

 

More than 25% of China’s trade volume in 2016 comes from trade with Silk Road countries

According to the Report, China’s total value of trade with countries along the Belt and Road was about $953.59 billion in 2016. It accounts for 25.7% of the total amount of China’s foreign trade, which has increased 0.4% in comparison with 2015. China’s export volume to Belt and Road countries has been on the rise since 2011. In 2016, Chinese exports to the Belt and Road countries peaked at 587.48 billion USD.

 

Regarding the import and export structure, from 2011 to 2015, China has expanded its trade surplus with the Belt and Road countries. In 2016, the surplus hit 221.37 billion USD, which was the first ever drop recently.

 

Vietnam becomes China’s largest trading partner along the Belt and Road

The Report shows that, regarding the trade cooperation, 7 countries in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore has become China’s full partners with a wide range of commodities for trade and long history of trade. In the context of weak global economy, 19 countries foresee huge potential increase in trade volume with China and enjoy already rapid increase in trade volume with China, including Kirghizstan, Hungary, Romania, and Cambodia. In the trade volume with China, for 22 countries, approximately half, in some cases more than half, comes from energy and raw material, for example, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates. And 16 countries, such as Turkey and Kazakhstan, see small trade volume with China and expect more economic cooperation.

 

Regarding the trading market, Southeast Asia is China’s largest export destination and the largest source of imports. And the import and export products are mainly electro mechanic products. Also, Vietnam overtook Malaysia to become China’s largest trading partner along the Belt and Road.

 

Eastern China, Southern China and Northern China are major areas to develop trade cooperation with countries along the Belt and Road

The Report indicates that, in terms of China’s trade values to the Belt and Road countries, Eastern China, Southern China and Northern China are the major areas to develop trade cooperation with, in which Guangdong is of the largest trade volume, accounted for 20.9% of the total amount in China, followed by Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Beijing with over 10%.

 

Based on exports, Eastern China and Southern China take the first two places, accounted for 72.1% in whole, while Eastern China, Southern China and Northern China are the three main importers with the proportion of 85.2% in total.

 

Overall, trade cooperation is more condensed in certain regions, both in China and along the Silk Road, a reflection of Matthew Effect.
