A concert with a theme of the ancient civilizations along the Silk Road was staged on Sunday at the National Center for the Performing Arts to mark the second anniversary of the establishment of the Silk Road Chamber of International Commerce.

The concert, titled Silk Road Melodies of Harmony, was performed by the plucked instrument orchestra and the symphony orchestra from the Central Conservatory of Music.

Students and teachers from the conservatory treated the audience with songs featuring elements of traditional culture and customs from regions along the ancient Silk Road, including Chinese folk songs "Camel Tinkling Bells" and "Spring of Tianshan Mountains."

Zhang Quansheng, a matouqin (horse-head fiddle) player from the band Haya, was invited to perform "Riverside of the Xin," which expresses the spirit of the Mongolian people living on the grasslands.

The concert drew a rousing ovation from the audience which were mainly representatives from 73 countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Kassem Tofailli, President of the Arab Chinese Cooperation and Development Association, said: "I'm totally immersed in this culture, especially this kind of music. I can even imagine the grasslands."

The concert was a part of the second anniversary celebrations for the Silk Road Chamber of International Commerce. The celebration also saw the launch the "Silk Road cultural park" project which is planned to be a platform for cultural exchanges in Xi'an, Shanxi province.

The chamber spared no efforts in boosting cultural links between the different countries and regions.

Lu Jianzhong, President of the Silk Road Chamber of International Commerce, explained why the chamber, as a commercial association, gave such a priority to cultural exchanges.

"The Silk Road is a road to peace. We can promote friendship and understanding among people from a variety of cultures through cultural activities, which is surely conducive to the commercial cooperation among countries."
